Mayella Ewell is a poor white woman who lives in Maycomb County. Mayella’s house is a desolate Negro cabin behind the town’s trash dump. Her fence is made up of tree branches and broken tools. Despite all this, Mayella Ewell does have power. “Yes, suh.
a. The Constitutional Convention took place in the year of 1787. It was a place where delegates from the various colonies discussed various issues that were going on during this time. This convention was very important to our nation because it served as the foundation of what came to be known as the constitution. The constitution was a process in which a lot of people were involved with. According to the Oxford guide to United States History, the congress called for a convention in Philadelphia because they wanted to make changes to the articles that were originally proposed.
One day in Maycomb, Alabama during the great depression a young girl named Mayella Ewell was raped. This shows Mayella is one powerful young girl in the story To Kill A Mockingbird. It will show how she is power through class, race, and gender. First Mayella is powerful through her class ranking. In the story it said that the “Maycomb’s Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump in what was once a Negro cabin…”.
In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird Mayella Ewell's is a powerful young teenager. In the 1930’s in Maycomb, Alabama Mayella set news to the small town, she made allegations of rape against Tom Robinson. Mayella is as powerful as the ocean when it takes you underwater. In Harper Lee’s, To Kill A Mockingbird will show Mayella’s power by using Class, Race, and Gender.
Mayella Ewell is a white woman in “To Kill A Mockingbird” that lives behind a dumpster. One reason she does not have power is her gender. Mayella is a woman, and being a woman in that time period was
Mayella Ewell is a white woman, from Maycomb, Alabama, accusing an African American man named Tom Robinson, of Rape. In To Kill A Mockingbird the Ewell’s are very unfortunate. Mayella would get abused by her father, Bob Ewell, when he would get drunk. Nobody in Mayella’s town would help her because of her race, class, and gender. This could make Mayella not powerful.
The court case, how she lives, and her gender all influence the way she is perceived. Mayella Ewell is perceived as powerless due to her class and gender, however, she is seen as powerful due to her race. Mayella Ewell is powerless because of her class. In Document A, “Get Back to Your Dump”, chapter 17 states, “Maycomb Ewells lived behind the town
Mostly everybody that lived in Maycomb saw Tom as a bad person because he had been wrongly accused of doing a crime that was not his. He was wrongly accused of raping Mayella Ewell, most of Maycomb is racist so they immediately assumed he was the one
The racist community and jury were the reason for the outcome of the trial. Not only were they racist, but Maycomb treated Tom Robinson with a lot of disrespect. The way Tom Robinson was treated in Maycomb was unfair and another reason for his situation. On page 229, Dolphus Raymond says “Cry about the simple hell people give other people without even thinking. Cry about the hell white people give colored folks.
The trial of Tom Robinson shows just how ignorant the general population of Maycomb is. Atticus, Tom’s lawyer bombards the courtroom with obvious evidence against Bob and Mayella Ewell’s case and Tom is still charged guilty. It’s really important because it shows that even if there’s an obvious right and wrong, people will still follow the wrong as it’s easier not to go against the grain. “Then Mr. Underwood's meaning became clear: Atticus had used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts of men's hearts Atticus had no case.” (245).
(100), here, Atticus knows even if everyone knows Tom is innocent and Tom’s opponent is white trash and ignorant, everyone understand that he will suffer racial discrimination and will be labelled guilty no matter the proof. Racial segregation will be the main factor as to why no one will choose a black man’s side over a white’s. No matter how much evidence there is, the mindset on blacks in Maycomb is nearly impossible to discard. “Atticus had used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts of men’s hearts Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed” (276), it is no surprise when Tom tries to escape the prison and dies doing so, because everyone knew there was no hope for him once a white accuses him.
She was in the worst part of the social structure there is, "Maycomb's Ewells lived behind the town garbage dump in what was once a Negro cabin […]" (Doc A). Unfortunately, because she's so poor, no one above her wanted anything to do with her, "[…] white people wouldn't have anything to do with her because she lived among pigs […]" (Doc E). Unfortunately, Mayella turned out
They are disreputable and people always tell the Ewells to “get back to your dump.” (Doc E). The Ewells are also negligible partly because of their living conditions so the rest of their community say that they live like pigs and “White people wouldn’t have anything to do with her.” (Doc E). Since no one wanted anything to do with the Ewells, Mayella was just an outcast to the rest of the community and must have never had friends or anyone to talk to other than Tom Robinson.
But she said he took advantage of her, and when she stood up she looked at him as if he were dirt beneath her feet.” Mayella’s loneliness and powerlessness drove her to have an affair with a black man, breaking a societal code. She is a victim of poverty because of the hatred and discrimination occurring in Maycomb. Although some might view Mayella Ewell as a victim, others might view her as a villain because she broke a societal code by attempting to have an affair with a Negro.
(Pg 276) A person that has control on the outcome didn’t even stand up to help the trial of Tom Robinson. This unjust area is completely dependent to the racial thoughts in Maycomb. Not only that but black people aren’t welcomed into this area due to the possible punishment that could happen to them. They could be held accountable for something they didn’t even do.
