The author of this book, Harper Lee, characterizes Tom Robinson in many different ways. One way that Harper Lee characterizes Tom is that she shows he is kind-hearted. When Tom Robinson is giving his testimony, he indicates that he not only helps Mayella, but he enjoys it as well. Whenever Tom would walk to and from the plantation that he worked at, he would pass by the Ewell’s place and often find Mayella standing in the front yard, who would ask him to help her with a certain task. Tom would then gladly help her with whatever she needed, whether it be chopping up a chiffarobe or gathering water so she could tend to her flowers. Even when Mayella would offer a nickel to pay Tom for his services, he would refuse to accept it because he was
