Tom Robinson is crippled on his left hand which was caused by getting his hand stuck in a Cotton GIn when he was 12 years old, as Tom recalled "I got it caught in a cotton gin, caught it in Mr. Dolphin Raymond's cotton gin when I was a boy....almost bled to death....tore all the muscles loose from my bones." (Lee pg 186)”. This shows that Tom Robinson couldn’t have choked her and beat her with one hand so it would have been almost impossible to do any of this. Atticus wanted to make sure the jury had no qualms about acquitting Tom Robinson. Another reason this is an important fact is, because right when Tom brought up the fact that he only had one hand the expressions on Mayella's face turned from sad to surprised or like if she committed
Recently, a negro named Tom Robinson has been jailed for supposedly raping a white woman, whose name is Mayella Violet Ewell. This is certainly biased since the family of Mayella did not provide any fact or evidence, rather only one witness who could have easily lied. Therefore, Tom Robinson could have been falsely accused of doing something a man like himself wouldn’t do. There are several reasons that suggest that Tom Robinson is innocent.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson is a minor character. Tom Robinson cares for his family. Tom is a helpful person and he provided for himself. He is innocent and hard working. Tom is an innocent man.
Jasper Jones Essay Throughout the novel, Charlie must question his conventional notions of right and wrong. How are language techniques used to demonstrate the theme of morality and ethics? Jasper Jones, the iconic Australian novel, explores the main theme of morality and ethics, through a range of language techniques and conventions. As the story progresses, Silvey constantly challenges Charlie’s notions of right and wrong, with the use of narrative, language conventions and techniques, and unique writing styles. The story is mainly written using a first-person view seen through the eyes of Charlie, who is also the narrator.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the story is set in the 1900’s, Maycomb, Alabama. During this time there was racism in the south and segregation which separated the whites and blacks from everything. There was also the Great Depression, the whole country was poor and people living in the country had to trade and do other jobs for people to either pay them off or to buy something from them. The trial in this book is about Mayella and Bob Ewell, two white people, claiming and arguing that Tom Robinson, a black person, raped Mayella Ewell. This trial is really important because at that time in the south, white people took advantage of black people and their kindness and thought they would take that or shut up just because they were black.
The last significant illustration of a mockingbird is the black man Tom Robinson. Tom is a quiet and reserved person. Mayella calls Tom over as he is walking by because she is feeling lonely and desperately needs someone to converse with. Tom Robinson only goes to her because he feels sorry for her, His intentions were good; he meant no one harm. His only goal was to be kind and helpful.
The witness swallowed. ‘She reached up an kissed me side of th’ face.’ ” (Lee 197). It was evident that Tom Robinson wanted no part in what she was trying to do, he already had a wife and kids and knew what would happen if they got caught. Mayella knew all of this and despite it, kept on trying.
He is a mockingbird as well because his intentions were to assist Ms. Ewell when capable and nothing more. Tom was a good man, even when discriminated by white folks. Though he was an African American , he was always respectful and courteous. Not only does Tom get discriminated for being black, he gets mistreated by the town for raping Mayella Ewell. Mr. Robinson did not really rape Mayella Ewell
Certainly in this case since Mayella is white and privileged for the color of her skin tone’...at the present time”The Ewells have presented themselves to you gentlemen, to this court...confident that you gentlemen would go along the assumption, evil assumption, that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women…” ("DBQ: IS Mayella Powerful?" 19)Tom Robinson could have lied about feeling sorry for Mayella, because all Negroes lie.
Harper Lee also uses Tim Johnson, the mad dog, as a symbol of racism. Tim Johnson is being taken over by the disease of rabies, just like Maycomb County is being taken over with racism. Racism, like rabies, is controlling every decision and move that the people of Maycomb, or Tim Johnson, carry out, mindlessly killing or hurting everything in their sight (Shmoop Editorial Team). The people of Maycomb are not thinking about what they are doing. They do not distinguish a person, since their judgment is clouded by the racist thoughts that are influenced by the county, they discern an object, or even an animal, that they can do anything they want to do with.
Sophie Bennett Bennett 1 10-12-16 Dr. Bayazitoglu English 1.4 “A Good Man” Imagine it is the 1930 and you are a African-American living in Alabama, where racial discrimination is huge. How would you live in this time? Many characters in To Kill A Mockingbird just follow how others act but some were able to go their own way and have their own opinions.
A lot of people don´t stand up for what they think is right. I know sometimes it is discouraging to say something without someone saying about you said. even if you are hated for saying something that you think is right in your beliefs. I think that Atticus Finch is someone who stands up for what he believes in.
Atticus Finch's character I think is good because of the way he treats his kids, the way he reacts to violence and the way he refuses to treat anyone any different than the next person especially black people and during this time that is not something you would normally see. especially not a black man who was wrongly accused of rape like and ended up dying to cover a white woman's lie like tom robinson did. I think that in the book that is the number one thing that makes him different and have a good character even though everyone poked and spit at him for it he still defended tom robinson the best he could even though it was really a lost cause which is more than anyone else would have ever done for him. I also think atticus finch is
He was giving of himself help. He was in no way harming anyone. Then when Bob Ewell came home and found Tom Robinson, he set out to ruin his life. Tom was innocently helping Mayella when Bob Ewell accused him of raping his daughter. The white people said Tom was guilty, killing Tom with their conviction before he even had a fair trial Tom’s is seen by very few of the characters in the book.
Dillon Lindstrom Mrs. Engelstad English 11, Hour 7 22/03/16 Critical Analysis “If you can learn a simple trick, you 'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." [30] . The character, Atticus has a hand in three buckets throughout the story.
