Melba Beals was certainly full of grit. When she insisted on going back to school after segregationists were trying to keep her out the school, but she still insisted on going back to school to finish her classes and take her final exams. Even, after all, those people told her to get out yet she finished high school with pride. When Melba showed her grit, later on, people started encouraging her more saying she’s doing a great thing for this town (Beals 224). I thought this anecdote was important because it shows an example of how grit is used in the right context. In contrast, both Mayor Faubus and Odysseus were negatively impacted by their character traits; Mayor Faubus’ pessimism cost his chance to be renowned as being the first state in the segregated states to allow integration, and Odysseus foolishness cost him peace with Poseidon 's. While the previous paragraph focused on how life can be enriched by fostering positive character traits, it is sadly also true that one’s life can be hindered by acting the opposite of these traits. Prudence, for example, means to act wisely in any situation, while optimism means expecting the best in the future and working to achieve it. To be foolish, therefore, means to act in a wise manner with facts that could keep one safe in a situation; to be pessimistic means to not being able to look forward in time and keeping a positive mind. Finally, Grandma India and I share some character strengths of spirituality, benefiting both our lives; I show it through community service, religious education, and Grandma India through her support to her family at tough times. Spirituality means thinking about a higher purpose or meaning in the universe. Another definition of it too is to not being concerned with material values or pursuits. For example, is modern day Oprah Winfrey is one of the most spiritual and successful influences in the media. Through her television career, Oprah has interviewed spiritual leaders from various religions, including the Dalai Lama, Reverend Ed Bacon, and Thich Nhat Hanh, as well as new age “gurus” including Rhonda Byrne, who wrote the bestselling book, The Secret. She also helped make Eckhart Tolle’s books, A New Earth, and The Power of Now, into bestsellers. Another example of spirituality is me, I always go to church when needed; I try to volunteer whenever I can to help the less fortunate and try to encourage or help out people whenever I can. One event in particular that helped me allow this trait is the death of my father. That 's when I realized He had a special reason for taking him. Melba is working on her diary while being reunited with all her old classmates that went to central with her; she’s talking about if only Mayor Faubus could see the whole gang together once again. Then, she transitioned into a flashback. “My Grandmother India had always said, God had pointed
