Everyone has their own idea of the American Dream. Although everyone’s idea of the American Dream is similar, media has done a very good job at altering our ideas of that dream. The dream used to be to work hard and get a good job that you enjoy and to make good money, now however, the dream is to have to latest and best technology, make a lot of money but not take any pride in their job, and become famous and known from all of the stuff that you own. Now people have come to love the media so much they have become somewhat dependent upon it and it has altered the mindsets of our world. The teenagers in this society have been born into and have grown up in a technology dependent world. They believe that technology is the only way to live their life the right way and to be happy. Technology and staying connected through media has become the only thing that teens, and even some adults care about. And instead of striving for excellence through hard work to gain satisfaction, we turn towards our phones and our expensive items. We have all been molded around the idea that have material possessions will make us feel “happiness, joy, and satisfaction” as stated in an article from Personal Excellence. The goal in life is no longer to get a job that you enjoy so you can have a home and raise your family the way you want, the goal is to get a job that you can tolerate so you can support your habit of buying your happiness. Children no longer go outside to play with their friends, but rather text them about their new video game that they got.
