We see it every time we turn on the news, the two major parties bashing each other constantly and put out false information to make people side with them over the other. The media is a person's daily source of new information and they believe what they see. "Whoever controls the media, controls the mind." - Jim Morrison. Media is a very powerful tool or weapon and can be manipulated to control a population. Media can be used by a government or group to perceive something that is false as true or vice versa. The saying "the pen is mightier than the sword" applies to media in that media can control a nation and just as easily break It. The telescreens constantly put out positive news about Oceania and the war. It gives a sense of the totalitarian nation being perfect to its citizens. When the media has all positive news about one's own nation there is a positive mood throughout the citizens. When the citizens feel as though their nation is perfect, there is no conflict between the citizens and the hierchy. The news media can be used to spread lies to influence a group of people, which is what is happening in Oceania. In our modern-day society, media is used by the two major political parties to influence their opinions on citizens. Both parties spread lies it is a well-known fact but citizens believe it because it is on the national news. People will believe what they see, even if it sounds ridiculous. The torture can be used to make a citizen believe anything they are told, like in the case of Winston. If a nation threatens its citizens with torture, the citizens will do whatever they are told. They will do what Winston did and eventually believe whatever they are told no matter if it makes sense or not. You may think could this happen in the real world? North Korea is a nation under dictatorship, its citizens are constantly fed false news. Kim Jung Un, the leader, puts out only positive news to his country. The citizens think that North Korea is one of the major superpowers in the world while it is not. The media puts out nothing but positive news on Kim, one article shows that he is a master at every sport. the citizens believe this fully because they are afraid not to. The harsh punishments from the government make the citizens have a habit of believing anything the media publishes.
