As the presence of social media has increased, there have been many repercussions that have come upon users of it as a result. Anyone on social media can record and show anything they observe; which can be school fights, arguments and even the most violent of acts that have been happening as of lately: school shootings. According to TIME magazine, there have been 17 recorded incidents so far in 2018 where guns have been fired on or around high school and college campuses. All of them have had one aspect in common: social media has been available to capture every moment. Due to our constant connection, the media does little to censor events that are happening and will instead choose graphic images to plaster onto the front pages of articles, websites and newspapers. and users retweet videos with graphic content to ‘increase awareness’ on an issue. The evidence in images however, cannot lie. Violent news will be available to the public at their every turn, the coverage will not go away unless something is done, which is to let the images stay where they are. Underneath our very noses, there are other industries that hide their work ethics behind closed doors, where we do not pry to learn more. One example of this is the food industry, where the maltreatment of animals is a known fact but not something individuals would care to acknowledge. “Why shouldn’t we be able to view, in the supermarkets themselves, photographs and videos that depict the conditions in which chickens and cows are held – before we purchase their eggs, milk and meat?”
