Have you ever viewed the news or perused the daily paper about the wrongdoings that happen the previous evening or a little while prior? As you read or watch the new, you will see that the media over publicized crimes. For the example take the Central Park five crimes. The media have the people thinking that crime was a hate crime done by a street gang. The media portrayal the crime differently just so they can get their views up. I don’t believe that the media portrayed of crime reflects the “typical” criminal event. In this essay, I will explain how the media will portrayed crimes.
The media suggest to the viewers and/or readers that the victims are mostly elderly, women, and whites. It is true about the elderly and women being victims because criminal see them as easy targets. But white are not most likely to be victims. But the media focus on crime against white woman than other races. And people found out that her husband killed her. But when a Hispanic woman who was also pregnant named Evelyn Hernandaz went missing and found dead. Her missing people case was hardly cover by the media. Both crime took place in the same year which was 2004. Many people critics that the media coverage only care about missing white woman than other races.
The media suggest the crimes are more likely to be random and be committed by complete strangers. Sometime is statement is true. Like the central park crime that was committed by stranger. The media make it like the crime are complete by a serial killer. Per Erika Eichelberger in her article “Violence on the Home Front”, 79% of murders committed by people that they know. For example, A husband killed his children and step children in front of his wife in 2016. Another example, in November an uncle shot and kill his nephew. A person will know their killer as a friend or a family
