I viewed Frontline a documentary series, which episode was entitled Poor Kids. The frontline personnel spent time with three children Kailey, Johnny, and Britany along with their families as they all struggle financially. We perceive a glimpse of what it is like to live below the poverty line in America through a child’s eyes. While observing the documentary, I became consciously aware that children who are considered poor or living below the poverty line were more mindful of the responsibilities of life. The children were worrisome of the lack of employment for their parents, bills, and in Britney’s case; how they would accommodate their way of living to support a new addition to the family.
Rank explains, “households in poverty can be found throughout a variety of unban and suburb landscapes, as well as in small towns and communities across rural America,” (Rank 2 of 3). One may conclude that many destitute families are confined to certain places, which divide them between the rest of the population. This creates barrier that prevents these families from improving their living conditions. There are many small regions where poverty is common. Jade Walker, the author of “Number Of Homeless Children In America Surges To All-Time: Report”, is a veteran journalist with twenty-five years of experience covering international/national affairs, crime, the publishing industry, new media, and obituaries.
The poor are lazy and have nothing to offer: this seems to be the mindset for most of society and media. As bell hooks (1994), a prolific writer, wrote Seeing and Making Culture: Representing the Poor, (an excerpt from “Outlaw Culture: Resisting Representations”, published in 1994) , she argued that the representation of the poor portrayed by society and the media is far from actuality.
According to the PBS Frontline video “Poor Kids” 2012, more than 46 million Americans are living beneath the poverty line. The United States alone has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the industrialized world. It is stated that 1 out of 5 children are living in poverty. The video documented the lives of three families who are faced with extreme hardships and are battling to survive a life of being poor. All three families have more than one child and could barely afford to pay their bills and purchase food for their household.
One thing that Edin and Shaefer makes abundantly clear is that poverty has no face. Victims of a failing economic system come from different backgrounds and all have different stories. The 1.2 million families below the poverty line are black, white, Hispanic and Asian. Although there are different types of families living on $2.00 a day, many of the families have commonalities. For instance, I believe that Madonna, Jennifer and Rae had the most in common.
“Across the country, about 9.6 million families sThere are two major problems in our country that are being very overlooked; poverty and homelessness. They both are very common problems in America that should come to an end. There is no doubt that they can be stopped with the help of the government and other everyday people. All that needs to be done is help out with expensive housing, start initiatives for insurance, create more shelters, take more notice to the rural homelessness, and just reach out to actually understand how large this problem is.
Millions of people all over the world suffer from poverty. Americans usually think of third world countries when thinking of poverty, often one will not realize that it is a problem right here at home. Everyone will agree that poverty is a problem, but how exactly does poverty affect people? Most people will think of an old beggar on the side of the road with a sign and a tin can in their hand when they think of poor people. But the age group that is most affected by poverty in our nation is our children.
In America, Media bias is everywhere, in the United States all the information that an average American received through everyday sources, the news was most likely processed through the media and told through a biased point of view, when the media gets their hands on news if it is important then it probably won’t be talked about or downplayed no matter the source like in the newspaper, radio, television, movies, as well as other outlets that the media uses, the media only seems to share the news that they find interesting, even then the media would most likely have changed the story, in what they say is just tweaked news, what actually happened and what really happened would be two different stories, also the story would be told from one person
The United States of America is one of the most powerful countries in the world, of course a country as big and powerful like the U.S.A. it’s likely that other countries envy it. In September 11, 2001 an attack had happen in one of the most popular states of America. The attack happened in New York, New York; this attack happened in one of the most famous cities in America, being also one of the most media based places in the country. Music Video Reflection While making my music video I learned that the national level of poverty is just as bad as a global and personal level of poverty. In some ways, it still follows poverty cycle like in personal level poverty, but national level poverty is similar to global level poverty in that it affects more than one group of people it affects everyone. In order to conduct my research, I first had to look back on our class discussions on levels of poverty and the poverty cycle. I had to research what to use as an example, and in my case, it turned out to be Venezuela. I had to research a plausible solution and how to make it work on a national level.
a) Poverty The movie was taken in one of the state in India, which is Mumbai. Basically, in this movie Mumbai have been demonstrated as one of the worst poverty city in the India. The three main character which also known as three Muskeeter, Two brothers, Jamal and Salim by a neighborhood girl named Latika. Three of them were raised in slums of Mumbai.
It was concluded that the issue of poverty and how the media often exaggerates the information was understood, but still didn’t think that, if the “ information was portrayed accurately it would benefit the issue”. Some presume that, since the world already has people aware of the situation, but nothing is done about it, increasing the awareness wouldn’t necessarily increase the benefits. Students believed that people can help the poor, but it’s mainly the government 's action and decisions that can highly alleviate the issue. The data showed that the first image that pops into their heads when hearing the word poverty is revolved around extreme poverty. Most described it as starving kids in Africa, living with their families in poorly conditioned homes, barely surviving.
There is a lack of media coverage on poverty. How often do you see documentaries or television series about the poor? I believe not too often. In America’s media, the poor are almost always never mentioned. Have you ever seen a show that depicts lives of the poor in America?
Never the less, it’s ironic how in the 21st century we prize ourself for being progressive when almost half of us - over 3 billion people - can’t even conjure up what life is like beyond ‘the poverty trap’ they are in. We prize ourselves, when one out of every two children is poor. Can you imagine growing up as one of the 640 million kids whom have no adequate shelter, let alone a place to call home? Or the 400 million to whom safe drinking water is simply a figment of their imagination? Or maybe the 270 million who have no means of getting health care?
Conceptual Framework Media and information literacy has a big purpose in every learner. It is very important to have knowledge into it and advance education about it. But the come out of this point, majority of the learners are lack of knowledge on MIL and it manifest of-the-line the level of knowledge in media and information literacy. According to Wikipedia, media and information literacy recognizes the major role of information and media in our everyday lives.
