In my opinion, The Vow, shows many qualities of a medieval romance. From the beginning of the movie, everything for Paige and Leo started out great. They had just recently got married, but everything was ruined for them when they got into a serious car accident. They were rear ended and Paige burst out the front windshield which lead her into a deep coma. When Paige woke up they both learned that Paige had lost most of her memory. All of the moments they shared together were gone and he knew it would take a very long time for her to remember them again.
Throughout the movie, Leo not only faced the one challenge of Paige gaining her memory and love back for him. He also faced problems with Paige’s ex fiance, and the confusing relationship she had with her family. He wanted her to remember that she was once interested in art, rather than law. Law was what her family always had wanted her to do, and since she has no memory of loving art, the relationship she has with her family was much more confusing to her.
Despite all of these challenges, Leo was determined to help her get through it, and his main goal was for Paige to fall back in love with him all over again. They share many of the same characteristics. In medieval romances the main character usually goes on a quest, and in this case, Leo had a mission of getting Paige to fall back in love with him after losing most of her memory. Paige’s ex fiance coming back into the story is a perfect example of the good versus evil described in a medieval romance. Leo was tested on their love throughout this whole movie because Leo could have given up on their relationship, and although he wanted to, he didn’t. Leo knew their love was strong, and he had strong beliefs in regaining Paige’s love
