Free Association
The therapist would begin by engaging Mei Lin in free association, a basic tool in PP, to start exploring Mei Lin’s unconscious processes. With this technique, therapist would be able to encourage Mei Lin to share any thoughts and feelings freely without being constrained, regardless how painful, silly, illogical or irrelevant it may sounds. Moreover, the free association gives the client space and opportunity to unfolding unconscious motivations, desires, fantasies, fears and hidden feelings that may have been blocked and are related to the issue (Corey, 2013). It may not be able to address Mei Lin’s marital issues to a certain extent. Mei Lin came to the therapy presented with an issue regarding her relationship with her husband. Although Mei Lin has difficulties of her own, however, the issue of her marriage that she was presented with, may also be directly related to her husband. If this is the case, an approach that able to works on couple relationship may be of benefit.
Another limitation of using PP for the case study is that the therapist may be trapped in over-relating the issues to the past. Firstly, it may not be necessarily linked to the past. Secondly, there is another possibility that Mei Lin’s intense behaviour in therapy may be due to hormonal changes and other possible biological causes, which is not addressed in the approach of PP alone. The client would then be engaged in analysis and interpretation to explore the meaning of client’s experience as the therapist journey together to explore any underlying issues the client may have. Likewise, the interpretation is then used to develop insights. By developing insights, Mei Lin would be able to reconstruct her behaviour and functioning, coming to term with what had happened in the past, and eliminate maladaptive
