On the last Monday in May, Americans remember those who have fallen while serving our country. This is a significant holiday, as it lets us recognize those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that I can continue to live as an American citizen. All of the freedoms that we, the citizens of America, have become so accustomed to have been fought for through the valor of the American military. Education, freedom of speech, and so many other fundamental rights are protected by the armed forces of America. Being an American citizen means that I have access to education, I will be able to vote, I could someday run for office, and much more. The men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces left their families and friends in order to preserve the rights of American citizens. As a typical American citizen, I live in an area isolated from war zones and areas of combat. This makes it easy to forget the struggles and sacrifices that has been made for our country. This is a very special holiday, as it allows us time, as we take a day off from work and school, to remember what our soldiers have given up to serve our country. In our modern society, we don’t always have time to reflect upon the acts of those who have served us. Yet, on Memorial Day, we are able to gather together and remember those who have served, visit cemeteries of fallen soldiers, and attend ceremonies of remembrance so that we never forget the sacrifices that have been made for our country.
