In society today, mental health is a big issue and a horrible thing to encounter. Mental health can get so bad that suicide has became a huge problem in our society. In Heroes, Francis Cassavant developed mental issues throughout the book. Francis developed feelings for Nicole Renard, his classmate at St. Jude’s Parochial school. Francis battled with depression and suicidal thoughts. When suicidal thoughts teemed, they were from Nicole was sexually assaulted, and the events leading up to this moment will be acknowledged. Nicole, blushing and flirtatious, previously enjoyed time with Larry, and later on, Larry raped Nicole. At that moment, Larry was committing a horrible crime and Nicole would forever be traumatized by Larry. Larry Lasalle, a rapist, sexually assaults Nicole Renard. …show more content…

Francis joins the army because of Nicole getting sexually assaulted. He feels that it is his fault because he was there in the event of it happening. Parading, pretending, prancing, Nicole is in love with Francis. Francis. Moreover, Francis sees Nicole with Larry lassale, previously before Francis was on a mission to kill Larry. And then Francis sees Nicole with Larry and that upsets Francis to the point of feeling betrayal. Later that day Larry sexually assaults Nicole but Francis is still feeling the betrayal he had felt when she was flushed towards Larry, being that he felt betrayed, he didn't help Nicole during this bombardment. These events lead to Francis forging his birth certificate at the age of fifteen, and heading out to war.
