Personal Statement. My interest Out of all the different types of nursing. I am interested in studying mental health nursing. My decision to study mental health nursing came from my research, personal and work experience. The Department of Health (2002) publication highlighted the challenges healthcare professionals are facing when they are supporting people with a mental health illness and substance misuse problems (alcohol and drugs). This is one of the biggest challenges for the health service (DH, 2002). My aim in the future is to be part of the healthcare professional that would care and support people with mental health problems and make a difference in people’s lives.
My experience

Here, I supported people that have a dual diagnosis of mental health problems, for example, people with a drug problem and anxiety disorder. When caring and supporting patient, I worked in collaboration with different professional such as the mental health nurse, the psychologist. In the process of working with them I learnt different skills such as writing of care plans and taking of patients vital signs

The experience gained from working in this environment includes how to communicate with the patient and other professional such as making referrals to the dentist for patient. I understand the importance of maintaining professional boundaries (Griffith, 2013) while I maintain therapeutic relationship between myself and patient.
