Throughout the movie industry, there are many movies that depict mental illnesses to their viewers which helps bring awareness to it. Of the movie industry, there are two in particular, 50 First Dates and Rain Man. Each of these movies depicts how mental illnesses can affect the individual and the people around them. Furthermore, each movie will be further analyzed to understand what exactly was happening to the character that had the mental illness and how they affected the people surrounding them. To start off, in 50 First Dates, a character named Lucy Whitmore is introduced to the movie. At first glance, Lucy might have seemed normal however she was suffering from the mental illness of anterograde amnesia where she can not form new memories. To put it in perspective, Lucy would have a regular day with her routine but then once the next day comes, she forgets everything that happened the day before which is restricting her from forming new memories. This is because Lucy underwent a traumatic event in a car accident where she damaged the temporal lobe of her brain. Raymond is unable to have friends because he can not communicate with others and would rather be by himself. He is also unable to have a job because is unable to comprehend certain things like money and can not focus on the tasks at hand to complete the job. Raymond can not be independent because he does not understand how certain things work. For example, Raymond left the toaster oven on and did not turn it off because he did not know it worked like that which almost caused a fire.
