Who is most at fault for Tybalt and Mercutio’s untimely demise? Now, reader, that will be the case I will be cracking today. Perhaps the quick-witted and sarcastic Mercutio was responsible for his own death? Although, who’s to say that the powerful Lord Capulet wasn’t at fault; maybe it was the highly respected Romeo who began the unravelling of the chaotic thread which we call Romeo and Juliet? Despite being a “highly respected youth,” Romeo has done many things to tarnish his reputation. Reader, I am confident to say that you are intelligent enough to know that attending the party hosted by Capulet should have been -and was- detrimental to his polished and high standing reputation within Verona. Adding to this, Romeo not only married Juliet merely hours after he met her; he also married the daughter of a rival family. Now, if this isn’t enough to convince you, perhaps the fact that Romeo refused to fight Tybalt- which was seen as highly dishonourable at the time- caused Mercutio to step in for him. Additionally, Romeo ended up infuriating Tybalt and fueling his forest fire of rage as well as turning down the fight- “But love thee better than thou canst device.” …show more content…
