Meriwether Lewis was an American explorer, the governor of Louisiana, and a leader of the Lewis & Clark expedition of which he traveled throughout the new Louisiana territory to discover more about this land and achieve goals for the new land. He was traveling to D.C. to deliver “Jefferson classified information.” But, it ended up that on this trip, Meriwether Lewis had died. Meriwether Lewis was murdered by conspiracy. Let’s start with the physical evidence. The autopsy report indicates that someone else likely shot Lewis, and an official document written by a doctor even stated that Lewis died by the hands of an assassin. The shot on Lewis’ head was a back-to-front shot, which he likely would not have inflicted on himself if he was …show more content…

But one of the main reasons is that the evidence that supports suicide is constantly found to be inaccurate or inconsistent, and it is extremely mysterious. First off, Priscilla Grinder, the only supposed witness to Lewis’ suicide, gave three inconsistent accounts about what happened. Each time she tells her account, her location changes, and even the situation switches around at some point. They also do not make sense, as she claims that Lewis requested a glass of water after he “shot himself,” but as badly as he had been shot, he would not have had the capacity to do this, or to move or crawl across a street, as she had said in one of her accounts. Then, there was Neely’s letter. He claimed to be at Grinder’s Inn on a specific date in his letter to President Jefferson about Lewis, but there were documents with Neely’s signature showing that on the day he claimed to be in Grinder’s Inn, he was actually at court, which was two days away from where he said he was. Then, there was Major Gilbert Russell’s letter to Thomas Jefferson about Lewis’ deranged state and attempted suicides on the way to D.C. This seemed like a plausible piece of evidence, but then it was discovered that Russell had never written this letter, so it was fake and it was forged. Any chance that the belief of suicide has at having plausible evidence, major flaws are revealed. This only continues to disprove that Lewis …show more content…

There is physical evidence to support the probable cause of death, there is additional evidence to prove and reveal that there were important suspects involved, and the opposing belief that he committed suicide has inaccurate and inconsistent evidence. The main culprit was George Wilkinson, as he had the strongest motive against Lewis and he was linked with people who could and would help him in his plan to murder Lewis. The owner of the inn, Robert Grinder, could have been involved in order to make a profit, and the inn could have been a trap for Lewis. The innkeeper’s wife would help by acting as a witness and sharing an account (or several accounts) of what had happened in order to be a cover-up. Then, other people linked to this, such as James Neely, would support this account by making a backstory about Lewis’ behavior on the journey and sharing it. These people would even go as far as to forge a letter from Gilbert Russell to send to Thomas Jefferson to further support this backstory and these accounts. But, we now see right through these shenanigans and attempts to cover up Lewis’ death as
