Life and Climate during Mesozoic Era
According to the International Commission on Stratigraphy’s International Stratigraphic Chart (ICSISC, 2008) the Mesozoic era or the “Middle Life” is divided into three periods: the Triassic which spans from 251-199.6 million years ago, the Jurassic which spans from 199.6 – 145.5 million years ago, and the Cretaceous which spans from 145.5 -54.5 million years ago.
During this time the climate is hot and tropical worldwide. The Earth is continuously changing, hence, life diversified rapidly. According to the University of California Museum of Paleontology (UCMP) the Mesozoic era was a great time of changes in the terrestrial vegetation it was dominated by ferns, gymnosperms such as conifers and other unusual plants. Comparison of Anatomy of Ammonites and Nautilus Despite the fact that the Ammonites and Nautilus may appear the same, they are easily distinguished by notable location and function of their anatomical features.
Siphuncle
According to the University of California Museum of Paleontology, the siphuncle is an internal tube that runs through and connects the chambers of the shell. This tube is used for expelling water and gases as the shell grows or decrease the density of the animal’s interior so that it floats upward. In Ammonites, siphuncle is found along the shell’s outer edge, while in Nautilus it runs through the center of the shell chambers, as shown in figure
