In the Crucible, Arthur Miller uses the characterization of Elizabeth Proctor to portray that once a person’s trust is broken, it can never be gained back fully. For example, when John Proctor came home to his wife, Elizabeth, he “gets up, goes to her, kisses her. She receives it.” (48) Miller uses this as indirect characterization, as Elizabeth only receives his kiss instead of kissing her husband back. She knows that he had an affair with Abigail, so Elizabeth still does not trust him completely.
Og Mandino once stated, “Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.” This quote is saying that you will never fail if you have enough determination. Arthur Miller’s The Crucible displays that John Proctor is driven by determination. Considering John is motivated by determination, he tries to show the people of Salem that the witch trials are artificial. He also had an affair with Abigail Williams and is trying to make things right with his wife.
Criterion A: Miller is in shopping mall and began to feel extremely anxious, and anxiety was accompanied by sensations of choking, smothering, and a sudden sense that the people and stores around her were unreal and unfamiliar to her. Criterion B: Despite the strange thought (e.g. she might feel she is going crazy) and sensation miller is experiencing, but she is not psychotic means that she is excludes the possibility of a psychotic disorder. Criterion C: Miller symptoms are exceedingly distressing which is affecting interpersonal and social life. For example, she is being anxious all the time and not discussing her disorder with her husband and has not visited the doctor for the checks up.
The dictionary defines a crucible as a place or occasion of severe tests or trials. During the late seventeenth century, many places around the world began to have an increased fear of the supernatural. Witch trials sparked by these fears brought great pressure upon all involved. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the people of Salem were placed under a lot of pressure as the witch trials were occurring. With pressure mounting, three men from the story each struggled in a different manner; Parris becoming fearful and cowardly, Hale undergoing a change in character, and Proctor taking a stand for what he believed to be right.
What if you were falsely accused for doing something you never did? Worse yet, the judge ends up believing the “victim” because you cannot present evidence that would prove your innocence. You would most likely end up in jail for a while, but at least you still have a chance to prove the accusation false. However, in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, characters that were accused of witchcraft did not receive that same opportunity. They faced a worse fate than spending months in jail; they got death.
By using the devil which everyone feared at the time, they got what they wanted. These actions were made by love and selfishness, love which ties to many emotions, including jealousy, which as young girls they could have had to start these trials. And selfishness, which these people were known for. Even if the person accused was innocent, they did not care, for they only cared for themselves. In a small town where mostly everyone knew each other, some people began to create grudges, rivalries, and hatred for one another.
In The Crucible, I noticed many dark forces. The ones that stuck out to me the most were the girls because they were mischievous. Thomas Putnam was a dark force in the story because he was trying to get people of the town killed so he could acquire their land. Abigail was a character that stood out as a dark force because he wanted Mrs. Proctor dead so she could be with John Proctor.
Imagine being placed in a situation where if one does not confess to their actions or beliefs, even if they are not true, there will be negative consequences. One would either confess truthfully or not, based the consequence and if they are willing to go through it for the greater good. This theme has been demonstrated through many ways such as in books, mainstream current media, and in the history of the United States. Negative consequences can influence whether or not one chooses to rightly, or falsely, confess as evidenced by characters in the Crucible by Arthur Miller, President Clinton confessing his affair after denying it, and finally, during the McCarthy era when politicians attempted to convince many Hollywood stars to falsely confess
In The Crucibles, the Puritans believe that bad luck can come to an entire community if just one member of the congregation sins. This explains, their personal turmoil over their neighbor’s affairs. With that being said, I believe that “one bad apple can spoil the barrel”. I believe that the actions of your neighbors and classmates can and cannot dictate or foreshadow your own choices and future. I do not entirely believe that they dictate your choices and future entirely, but I do think that they have some type of influence, whether you believe that or not.
In addition, this organization was established around 1938 and this origination was established because of the red scare and the overwhelming fear of communism spreading to the west. The primary Purpose of H.U.A.C.( House Un-American Activities Committee) was to investigate communistic influences and put an end to it. A common question most people would hear, if they were interrogated by of H.U.A.C was, " Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Communistic Party? " This origination would go around excusing a lot of people being Communists or communist sympathizers, many of these people were even communist or communist sympathizers. The H.U.A.C was known for running carriers one of these carriers was Arthur Miler.
“…We have perfected our weapons”, as Pope Francis said in St. Peter’s Square, “our conscience has fallen asleep, and we have sharpened our ideas to justify ourselves as if it were normal we continue to sow destruction, pain, death. Violence and war lead only to death”, which is why it should not be our only answer to all conflicts. At the time brutality may seem right, but later on people will suffer major consequences as referenced by Abigail, who falsely accused many who were executed, forcing herself to flee the country. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, people are falsely accused for crimes they would never come commit, yet they are found guilty based on the words of a minor. War is an unnecessary form of violence especially when it comes to the environment of children because in countries like Syria, child refugees are lacking education that is necessary for them to survive.
In life you have to live with the consequences of the decisions that you make. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor has to live with the consequences of his affair with Abigail Williams when he confesses it to the court publicly and he has to live with the consequences of what Elizabeth(his wife) does or says about the affair. Abigail Williams would have had to live with the consequences of her actions the night she and the other girls danced in the woods if she had confessed to doing witchcraft that night. The consequences of the people who did not confess to witchcraft, even though they were innocent, was that they were to be hanged. The play The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692; it is about the Salem witch
I chose to do the movie “The Crucible” which was directed by Nicholas Hytner. Also, it was produced in 1996. As we all know, Hollywood can change ideas of movies and/or events that happened in real life. The Salem Witch Trials were a real thing and it was a very unfortunate event that caused many to lose their lives. The Salem Witch Trials have always fascinated me because I find it very interesting how they can accuse somebody on causing something very serious such as fire, death or even droughts.
The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. The action begins in the home of Reverend Parris, whose daughter Betty lies unconscious and appears very ill. Around midnight the night before, Parris had discovered Betty, his niece Abigail, and Tituba, his black slave, dancing in the woods, causing Betty to swoon. The local physician is unable to determine the cause of Betty 's illness. Mr. and Mrs. Putnam arrive and reveal that their daughter Ruth is also ill.
Imagine a normal day, you're about ten years old and playing with some friends in the backyard. Then out of nowhere you see your mom or dad is frantic while being ripped out of the house. The worst part is that you cannot do a thing about it, because the people that are taking him or her taking them are bigger than you, and not to mention but they are also very important people, the kind that if you try to stand up for yourself or others against they will have a way to drop you. This feeling of being helpless this is how so many felt during Joseph McCarthy's time.
