Women all around the world are degraded and look down upon. All throughout history, women were considered housewives, caretakers, inferior, etc. Women are oppressed by patriarchy economically, politically, socially, and psychologically. To put an end to this, women began to rise and established a political and social organization that fights for equal rights of women known as feminism. This organization is not just open strictly to women, but for men as well. In the 1960’s, feminism found its approach in literature and began to examine various pieces of literature to re-evaulate its portrayal of women to fit the “modern woman” (Richardson 35). Feminism can be critiqued in many novels and short stories. The feminism literary criticism criticizes pieces of literature based on their findings of misogyny (negative attitudes about women). They are the head chiefs of the house. In the novella, Gregor was the breadwinner in the family, having to be the only source of income in fact. Feminist would feel empathetic toward Gregor because of his lazy, unemployed father, he is forced to go to work to pay off his father’s debts. He doesn’t have a life of his own and his family rarely paid attention to what he has done for them. He worked just as hard as women before his metamorphosis to fulfill his family needs. After the transformation, Gregor’s inability to become the provider of the family had him become dependent on the women in the household to feed him and clean his room. Unusually, the father is usually the leader and most powerful of the household. He is the enemy to feminist. Mr. Samas hurts his family rather than helping them out as well. Instead, he stays home and does nothing all day right until after Gregor’s transformation, he is forced to go back to work. Again, the roles are switched and he still neglects
