He is willing to take on anyone in order to support his family, which plays into the theme of family duty. Also, Gregor’s determination and military experience (pg 12) is displayed in his plan making and strategizing to capture his manager. The loyalty to his family, displayed by working and trying his best to keep a job he doesn’t want, gives insight into Gregor’s character. The unhealthy relationship Gregor has with his family is very common for a character in Franz Kafka’s book. His own tumultuous relation reflected onto his characters lives.
Neglect was immensely reflected in the story, “The Metamorphosis.” When Gregor had first transformed into an insect, his mom couldn’t stand the thought of even looking at him, and when she did, she’d burst into tears as if she was disappointed. Furthermore, the father had spite for his son and after he transformed; their relationship worsened and took a turn for the worst. Gregor’s parents were never there or even cared for him, and that’s one of the ways that neglect comes through in the story. As for Gregor’s sister; she knew she would have to take on the roll as a caregiver after their parents no longer wanted anything to do with Gregor.
Gregor’s apathy towards his new form shows not only that he cares deeply for his family, but also that the initial stress caused by his transformation is nothing compared to what he endures in his day to day life. Gregor’s
Gregor is extremely affectionate with his family and without a doubt loves all of them unconditionally. Even as Gregor is slowly dying on his bedroom floor, “He thought back of his family with emotion and love.” Gregor’s family is a big part of Gregor’s identity, and if they refuse to accept him and no longer view him as part of the family, a piece of Gregor’s individuality dies. If he is not Gregor of the Samsa family, he is just another man that is not unique from the rest. Gregor doesn’t want to believe that his family doesn’t reciprocate his unconditional love for them.
The narrator said, “During the first fortnight, Gregor’s parents could not bring themselves to enter his room…” He has been disconnected from his family to the point where they’re emotionally unstable and unable to treat him as he deserves with affection and comfort to help him cope with his metamorphosis. The narrator shows this disconnection before the mutation,”Gregor later earned so much money that he was in a position to cover the expenses for the entire family…” He later described the exchange not “particularly warm”. Gregor feels alienated by his parents because of the lack of affection for him providing for them.
This is the reason he isolated himself from his family. Gregor is forced to work in an environment he hates but his transformation overlooks that. He doesn’t have to suffer from his occupation and allows him to spend more time with his family. However, this change only had a positive affect temporarily.
Our interactive oral in class allowed me to dig deeper into time and place of the work. My understanding of existentialism and how it correlates with Anti-semitism within The Metamorphosis developed further. Existentialism explores human existence and the belief that everything is meaningless. Throughout The Metamorphosis existentialism is represented by Gregor and his purpose to live. Gregor's main purpose in the story is to provide for his family and stay attached to them.
The Repercussions of Cruelty Cruel actions lead to cruel endings. Gregor Samsa, the protagonist in Franz Kafka’s novella The Metamorphosis, is turned into a bug from the mental and emotional abuse by the hands of his own family. The cruelty in the Samsa household is apparent from the beginning of the storyline. Their neglect and lack of compassion for Gregor's condition immediately sets the dark and miserable mood of the novella. Gregor’s whole existence has been about caring for his family and making sacrifices for their well being.

In reading Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” the character Gregor is the one that he uses to describe a man who has an acute loss of spirituality. For example, Gregor had a dream he was a bug and this dream became so realistic that it turned into his reality. In Gregor’s perspective, he can’t control himself and has lost his self with this dream that his voice even changes making his family worry about him. Throughout Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” Gregor’s happiness or what he thought was happiness slowly starts to deteriorate. Kafka uses diction and symbolism to convey the family’s dissatisfaction and the deterioration in their family ties. Each family member acquires a job to compensate the loss of Gregor’s salary. First, Kafka illustrates the expendability of workers in a capitalist society with the role of Gregor at his workplace and within his family.
