Metamorphosis Grete Character Analysis Essay

In Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis, readers are often wondering whether Grete, Gregor’s sister has a true metamorphosis or if Gregor was the only character that had a true metamorphosis. There is an abundance of evidence supporting the statement that Grete matured and had a full metamorphosis as a result from Gregor’s metamorphosis. The first supporting detail is that on page 40 this is stated “....his sister’s present work; whereas, earlier they had often got annoyed at his sister because she had seemed to them a somewhat useless young woman.” This shows that in the beginning she was of no significant help until Gregor went through his Metamorphosis. She was mainly seen as a child and someone who was responsible for taking care of Gregor since his family never did their part. On page 31 it is stated that Grete was bringing Gregor food out of the kindness of her heart, this could mean that she had responsibility for him and she just cared for him from the beginning. She went from the personality explained in the previous piece of evidence, a useless child that helped take care of Gregor and was very fond of, to someone who has control of her family and is hateful towards her brother. There is noticeable parts in the story where it is very clear that Grete’s opinion on Gregor changed. She would bring him food and would not want to stay with him for long and that continued until the point where she would just give him food and leave immediately. She saw Gregor as a bug and certainly not her brother, on page 68 Grete said to her father, “It must be gotten rid of,’ cried the sister; ‘at is the only way, father. You must try to get rid of the idea that this is Gregor.” This proves the claim of Grete’s personality change because it shows how she felt about him and what she felt necessary to do to
