According to Miller & Rollnick (2013) MI is a counselling style in which is goal –oriented where the counsellor collaborates with a client to communicate using the language of change. Through MI a client’s personal motivation is strengthened and makes the client committed to a specific goal. It elicits and explores the client’s reason to change within an atmosphere of competence and compassion. Partnership means that MI is done ‘for’ and ‘with’ (Miller, & Rollnick, 2002). This means that this practice model is ‘for’ the client to get help and to be successful it has to be done by the counsellor ‘with’ the client. Counsellors cannot do the job alone because clients are the expertise of their own lives and challenges they face (Rollnick, & Allison, 2009). They must collaborate in which the counsellor invite the client to open to him and share his troubles in a way that they see things in the same perspective. Acceptance has four elements, firstly, absolute worth means that the counsellor must see the client worth as a human up to respecting and individualising the client. Secondly, accurate empathy means that the counsellor must understand the internal perspective of the client and not to sympathize. Thirdly, affirmation which is different with the other because it is not a private experience but the counselor has to look and acknowledge the client’s strengths and efforts. When being ambivalent, they already have the reasons why they should change and why they should not, which means they are just lacking something that needs to installed by a professional (Miller, & Rollnick, 2013). The counsellor evokes and calls forth the client’s strengths. Compassion is also on the elements underlying the spirit of MI. Although it was added later by Miller and Rollnick (2013) in which being compassionate is explained as being putting people’s welfare ahead and prioritizing their needs (Miller, & Rollnick, 2013). The services social workers provide are entirely for the people’s benefit. This means the helper’s heart must at the right place of truly helping. 5. PROCESSES OF MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING There are four steps the counsellor has to follow when applying MI which were also formulated by Miller, & Rollnick, (2013). This step follow each other, you cannot do the third step and come back to the first one. The first step is engaging which is when the counsellor connects and build a working relationship with the client.
