His father was a town administrator and small time banker. He moved to Florence, Italy when he was an infant. Michelangelo was not actually raised to take up the occupation of an artist. His father, Ludovico, was not at all supportive of Michelangelo’s aspiration to be an artist. Michelangelo was usually punished if he was found drawing or working on anything related to art. When Michelangelo was 13 years old, his father finally relented and let him quit school.
