"Mickalene Thomas, Mentors, Muses, and Celebrities" being displayed at Spelman College is currently on display at Spelman College. Mickalene Thomas is perhaps best known for her elaborate paintings that are decorated with rhinestones, enamel and colorful acrylics. Combining art historical, political and pop cultural references she introduces a complicated view of what it means to be a woman and expands common definitions of beauty.The current art exhibit as Spelman College is one of the best because it captures the attention of the audience, it shows free expression of black women, and allows you to appreciate the artistry of black women. This is something that I really enjoy because it grasped my attention.. "Mickalene Thomas: Mentors, Muses, and Celebrities," an exhibition featuring photographs, film, and video, is a richly textured, and moving portrait of the multiplicities of womanhood that builds upon the artist’s ongoing reconsideration of black female identity. I saw many different representations of black women throughout the exhibit and I I did not stray from the art at all.

When watching the barbie video in the black room, there is a clear depiction of drama and black culture. It gives each spectator, a character to relate to. The plot seemed to be centered around a black doll or woman who worked in a wing spot and she was somewhat attractive. Many men vied for her attention and longed to be intimate with her. The artist did a good job at connecting the actions with the dolls to invoke emotion or controversy. Because of this, the artist shows few or no limits. This exhibit also includes artistry of the human body. When seeing the videos of nudity but more so focused on the anatomy of the female body.
