Midsummer Night’s Dream is a short story written by William Shakespeare in the mid-1590s. This play, which took place in a four day time period, captures the full extent of Shakespeare's intellectual imagination. This play consists of a large range of major characters, such as Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius, Helena, Theseus, Egeus, Hippolyta, Puck, etc. After the elopement of two love struck individuals, Lysander and Hermia, Demetrius and Helena follow them into the forest and a confusion of who-loves-who ensues. In contracting this affair of love, we are also introduced to the relationship between Theseus and Hippolyta, who are able to summarize the relationship of imagination and reason towards the end of the play. Their relationship through the play experiences a theme of difficulty, being that Egeus, Hermia’s father, does not wish that she marry Lysander but rather Demetrius. Once Lysander and Hermia elope into the forest, Lysander is soon targeted by Oberon’s love potion and falls in love with Helena. However, as the story proceeds, Oberon’s magic potion is relieved from Lysander’s eyes, and his true love for Hermia returns. Though previously engaged, Demetrius left Helena once he met Hermia, who is betrothed to Lysander.
