Teen Dating Violence What is teen dating violence? Teen dating violence is the emotional, physical, mental, and/or sexual abuse a young adult could possibly face in a relationship. Abusive relationships have become more common than people may think. Teen dating violence can happen to anyone: ethnicity, race, gender, age, sexual-orientation does not decide whether or not dating violence will happen to you. Throughout the past few decades, teen dating violence has become a pandemic in our society. There are a lot of people that do not realize how prevalent teen dating violence is in our society. Some believe that victims put in onto themselves since they stay in the relationship or they make their story more dramatic than what really happened. In the book, Teen Dating, Mike Males explained his viewpoint of teen dating violence, “The large majority of teens have never experience(d) the controlling behavior or physical, sexual, verbal, or emotional violence characteristic of dating abuse even once,” Males believes that teen dating violence isn’t a very serious problem because in his opinion, there are a lot of teenagers that do not go through the characteristics of abuse in their relationships (Males 33). Although Males is entitled to his opinion, the large majority of teens he is referring to might still be victims or survivors of teen dating violence and have not spoken about it. There are teens that do not speak about their experience for many different reasons. They could be in denial about their violent relationship or they are afraid to come out about their experience. Many survivors and victims of dating violence are afraid to speak about their relationship because their afraid of the outcomes and of their abuser. The persecution some victims and survivors receive when they talk about their abusive relationship can also keep them quiet about the situation because they don’t want people to not believe them. Therefore, Males opinion on teen dating violence cannot be accounted for due to the vast majority of teens that are not public about their violent
