Mentorship within leader development and the matter of why it is the most influential factor in leader development is a factor that is too often overlooked. Despite how crucial it is to the development of effective leadership to ensure operational success. Within the Army, it is paramount to the primary mission of every Soldier to mold themselves and those around them into a more capable fighting force. Therefore, without determined and capable leadership the ability of the United States Army to fight and win the nation's wars is hindered by the lack of inefficiency and discipline. As once stated by the sixth President of the United States John Quincy Adams on his thoughts of excellent leadership "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.". Formal education and courses expand the utility of a leader and are what make up the foundation of the institutional domain. Mentorship works in tandem with institutional training but extends further providing practical insight and real-world experience. This is alongside guidance that cannot be captured within the setting of a classroom. Additionally, Mentees can pull from their mentor's experience that can offer valuable advice and perspective to help navigate their complex professions and roles. This is not always as straightforward as it may initially seem and without proper assistance can oftentimes seem like a maze. Moreover, it is not always easy to know where to begin in one's self-development expedition, and oftentimes requires some guidance. However, it is still paramount for a versatile leader's development. Leaders are encouraged to pursue these differing resources and opportunities for their betterment, and mentors provide invaluable guidance and recommendations for self-study methods and materials. Mentors are able to share their personal growth experiences to inspire leaders to expand upon their knowledge, refine their critical thinking skills, and develop a larger perspective on what leadership style is most suited to them.
