Men from poor and working class families were the majority of soldiers who were drafted into the Vietnam War. When your number was called, you were to report to the draft board that was run by leaders in your community. That being said, families with more political power could persuade the board to send another man instead of one of their family members (Valentine, 2013). These young men are coming from poor or working class families and are now being forced into war. The government is making a generation become more violent. There is nothing in place to change the corruptness in the way young men are selected by the board. When you take away choice from the American people, the American people will make their voice heard through protests. If you force someone to do something they can handle it one of two ways. They can either take it how it is, or they can look for a way out. In the military there are very few ways out. The military suicide rates are rising already, we do not need to force young men in the military. The government should not mandate military service because it will make the young adults more violent, will lead to protests throughout the nation, and the military is just not meant for everyone. There were protests all over the nation during the Vietnam War. America is not the only country that is debating whether or not to mandate a draft. There were also protests in 2014 that shut down the main road between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv when Jerusalem tried to pass a bill that would require many of the ultra-Orthodox Jews to serve in the military (Chabin, 2014).
