Purpose, significance, and impact are crucial factors for an author who wants to make an important work of literature, however, should literature just simply mirror what society already believes in or should it inspire new doors to be opened? Throughout history, we have seen both examples of authors who write out of the norm while other authors are staying within the socio mindset of the time. However, the authors that question the norm and try to add different perspectives are the ones that really make an impact on society, the authors that challenge society to open their minds are usually more renowned and remembered in history. One such writer was Frederick Douglass, Douglass was born into slavery and eventually escaped and became an abolitionist, however, Douglass was taught how to read and write from a young age he said that “The white children could tell their ages. I could not tell why I ought to be deprived of the same privilege” (Douglass 1).Which during that time slaves were not allowed to learn, as a result Douglass took that opportunity to read books and self-educated himself to the point where he wrote his own narrative titled, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave which gave readers and society a realistic portrait of a slave's experience. Douglass’s goal was to abolish slavery as a whole and he wanted to do that through his narrative, as a result he wrote about his experience as a slave and he enriched it with his personal story to give society a view on what it was like to be a slave from an ex-slave’s eye. If Frederick Douglass did not decide to go against popular society belief he would not have inspired generations to fight for what is right, and he did that through his writings. So how did we build an economy as strong as ours and what did we base it off? The answer is that we based our economy off a book written in 1776 by Adam Smith known as the “The Wealth of Nations” which if one wants to understand the book one also has to understand the author. Adam Smith was a Scottish social philosopher and a political economist who wrote the “The Wealth of Nations” and elaborated on the idea of free trade and the “invisible hand”. Basically, Adam Smith tells us that government intervention in the market is not good and that market can run itself. The ideal of the free market provided by Adam Smith inspired many governments to adopt it and shape his idea into a way that best fits their countries. Even till this day, economists and political figures go back to “The Wealth of Nations” and try to implement the ideals of our government today.
