In today’s society, it seems imperative to have an ensured income in order for members of a society to take care of those that depend on them. While raising the minimum wage may be the most potent means to this end, it is also the solution that brings the most long term problems. However, this has not stopped the policy from being tested in cities such as St. Louise and Seattle. While both had subtly different in both cities affects the broad end result: the policy was cancelled after a loss the employer’s money was apparent. These results prove that minimum wage would be inadvisable due to a loss to the workforce population, paradoxical effects, and the potential for a loss of money if an increased minimum wage is enforced. However, while the workforce would stay intact longer with this arrangement, this obviously comes with the downfall of a loss of employer money. This has not stopped Target from proposing that their starting salary in 2020 will be raised from $11 to $15, with their CEO, Brian Cornell, stating “we see this as an … investment in the elevated experience of our guests” (D’innocenzio 1). The claim is that the increased minimum wage will allow the loyalty of their best employees, however lower level employees have expressed outrage over the potential termination of their jobs (D’innocenzio 1). This illustrates that even a major retailer such as Target cannot keep all their employees with a $15 minimum wage, and if the act was enforced that they do, they would lose money. However, raising the minimum wage simply to $10 has been proposed as well. Chipotle has stated that a raise from $9 to $10 would be irrelevant and even plausible (Kingsbury 211). However, this comes from a company that already has a starting salary of $9, almost $2 more than the national minimum. A raise from $7.25 to ten dollars would be more severe, and changing the minimum wage to say $8 dollars would not provide any additional amenities for employees. This illustrates, there is simply no logical way to enforce a raised minimum wage without it being either insignificant or devastating
