In response to your recent bill proposal to the United States Senate, S. 1150, I strongly advise you to reassess what you are advocating. Your bill, which was introduced to the Senate on the 30th day of April, proposed to raise the Federal minimum wage to approximately $8 by January of 2016—or three months after the implementation of the bill, whichever came later—and thereafter, a gradual annual increase. The proposal you are making, from afar, may appear to be a necessary action to enhance the living conditions of those earning well below the poverty level. However, this increase that you are urging for has been proven to yield negative consequences. Ultimately, regardless of how enticing it is to simply raise the federal minimum wage, such an action will doubtlessly provoke economic instability, further limit job opportunities, and certainly will not help reduce poverty. At the moment, the whole country has become fanatical about the federal minimum wage issue. As demonstrated by several protests throughout the country, the majority of the people are in favor of hiking up the federal minimum wage. Removing the minimum wage will consequently remove barriers preventing low-skilled workers from obtaining jobs that will enhance their experience and skill expertise. However, this method is highly impractical and nearly impossible to endorse. Voters will grimace from the mere sound of it, as it is the exact opposite of what they want. They will not understand the underlying benefits that could be gained from such a move. In lieu of this, the most practical action that will not generate further harm is to maintain the federal minimum wage as it is.
