The novel 1984 by George Orwell was a prediction of what the further held for society after World War Two. The novel takes place in the city of London, in the fictional country Oceania. The novel is written in the narrator Winston perspective. Winston works is the Ministry of Truth, his job is to rewrite history in the most basic sense. There are 4 Ministries The Ministry of Love, Peace, Plenty and Truth. The Ministry of Love is where people get tortured for breaking the unwritten laws everyone knows. The ministry of Plenty is responsible for the rationing of food that causes starvation. The Ministry of Peace is everything war related making the weapons and designing new weapons. The totalitarian government changes everything that comes out of the media to make them seem perfect. The party made outrageous claims like they created airplanes and helicopters. If anything the party says turns out to be incorrect, it is rewritten and reprinted nothing is allowed to be out there if it isn’t 100% pro party. “Very likely the confessions had been rewritten and rewritten until the original facts and dates no longer had the smallest significance. Which in turn helps in controlling the citizen’s thoughts. In the year 2013 in modern times there are lots of conspiracy theories about the government controlling the media. The same things happen in today society with monitored phones, internet surveillance and cameras everywhere. In the book 1984 every moment is watched if a person’s face is wrong for even a second the Party will notice. There are secret police hiding everywhere, a citizen in this society could easily be a secret spy in fact it’s probable. Winton’s know all these thing and notices “In the far distance a helicopter skimmed down between the roofs, hovered for an instant like a bluebottle, and darted away again with a curving flight. It was the police patrol, snooping into people 's windows (Orwell 12)”. In this society being watched is normal and completely accepted. The difference is not everyone is as aware of how much they 're being watched today. People today have internet and freedom so they don’t think for themselves, someone could easily be watching what they are doing. Even though “Today websites like Facebook track our likes and dislikes, and governments and private individuals hack into our computers and find out what they want to know. The average American knows that they are probably being watched. Yet they generally believe that it will never affect them or they believe other people are being observed not them.
