As the years go by, technology grows and advances tremendously. Since technology is constantly expanding and creating new opportunities it is being controlled, monitored, and protected by security agencies and even the government. One writer, Nathan Schlueter, author of “The True Lessons of 1984,” published in 2017, states that the book “1984,” is a warning against socialism and its dangers. Schlueter begins his article with convincing facts, opinions, and details from the book, “1984.” In a comparison to the book, “1984,” our society is similar to the proles. An example Kakutani uses is a device called “Alexa,” which is an Amazon product. This product is made to listen to the voices and commands of its users and perform the task that is being asked to do. Since this product is placed in homes and carries a microphone it is easy for anyone to tune in. The government can just as easily listen and watch citizens through the microphones and cameras of smartphones, tablets, and much more. This proves how easily it is for the government to access people’s devices. We the people are being monitored and controlled every day by “Big Brother” or what we call it our government. Our society today is also filled with false information and fake news. Michiko Kakutani says it best in the article, “It’s an era in which misinformation and fake news have proliferated on the web.” Since it is difficult to determine what is fake or real news it keeps people uninformed, which could be an advantage to the government. By the people not knowing the real news or by being distracted by the fake news makes it ten times easier for the government to get away with scandals, actions, decisions, and much more.
