The Blue Man tells Eddie, “That there are no random acts. That we are all connected. That you can no more separate one life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind (page 48). This remains true in The Five People You Meet in Heaven because the minor characters are just as important as the main characters. The little girl, Amy or Annie, Mickey Shea, and Nicky all played small roles in the novel, yet without them, the novel would be completely different. Each of these actions led to another event that affected someone else, thus proving that everyone’s lives are connected and that even minor characters can be as significant as the main characters. Nicky had put his car key in his jacket and tied the jacket around his waist, in hopes it would be safe there. After spending the evening on rides, he and his friends returned to the car lot. The text says, “Nicky reached into his jacket pocket. He fished around. H cursed. The key was gone (page 10).” Months later, as the cable to Freddy’s Free Fall began to break, Eddie realized, “The pulley was wedged by a small object that must have fallen through the opening at a most precise moment. A car key (page 17).” Through the quotes given the reader sees that because Nicky chose to put the key in his jacket pocket, and the key fell out, the cable was slowly degraded by the key. This led to the cart falling, and Eddie's death. Nicky is significant to the novel because indirectly, he is responsible for the cart falling and Eddie’s death.
