Tom sees many fights go by everyday. He wants to try and experience a fight with someone. Tom then says to himself, I'm not a tough guy and everyone knows it. No nerd wants to challenge another nerd to a fight.” (Kraft 128). Kraft uses the words “not a tough guy” and “nerd” to convey the tone of weakness. The words “not a tough guy” means that the person is weaker than normal and can’t take the physical or verbal punishments others can take. This makes a person seem weaker in their physical or mental attributes. The word “nerd” means that the person is really focused on school and isn’t necessarily into things that most of society would like. He realizes that no one would take a nerd seriously. This shows that Tom really understands how the social world is going in his school, and he doesn’t have a chance to try and make himself look good. Others making fun of him is what has been driving his behavior and mindset due to the lack of respect given to him. This has made Tom affected because he realizes how he really has no chance to do what he wants without being judged by others, and he isn;t able to participate in normal activity. Others feel constant pressure to try and fit in which makes someone acting like how someone really is on the inside gets taken out of the picture. Most people in society try and just fit in rather than just being the nerd or whoever the person really is. This makes people be friends with people who really aren;t real friends, but all of the people have the same idea of fitting in which could make a
