I have read this story once before and I hated it, but reading it again I saw it in a different light. The first time I read it, I was upset because I wanted Dev to be a better man and make Miranda happy. I was upset when they didn’t work out but after reading it again I am glad they didn’t. What Miranda and Dev have is not the typical type of love and readers can see that in the story. After re-reading this story, I don’t hate it as much because I can see how much the main character changed and developed. One section of the story describes a little bit more about the relationship Miranda and Dev have. “Miranda and Dev didn’t argue. They went to movies at the Nickelodeon and kissed the whole time. They ate pulled pork and cornbread in Davis Square, a paper napkin tucked like a cravat into Dev’s shirt.” (Lahiri, 90). Miranda and Dev never argue. Their relationship seems to be very materialistic. They go out shopping and eating dinner, but they never get too personal. In my opinion, the best relationships are the ones with the arguments and the fights because it shows that the other person is willing to express feelings and agree or disagree with them. Dev told her she was sexy while they were at the Mapparium one day and the little boy does when she is babysitting him. He asks her to put on her shiny cocktail dress and when she does, he calls her sexy. She then asks her what it means and after some persuading, he tells her. “It means loving someone you don’t know.” (Lahiri, 107). In the boy’s case, he sees this as his father has affairs with other women. His father doesn’t truly know these women but he “loves” them and finds them beautiful and does nice things for them. Miranda hears this and realizes that is all she has with Dev. They do not truly know each other, and their love is so materialistic
