In the book written by James W. Loewen, Loewen studies the biases of an ordinary history class, beginning each chapter with quotes from various historical figures. Loewen indicates that the root of the problems Loewen discusses comes from the history textbook itself. This being said the textbook gives a dull, culturally biased description of the past, often alienating readers such as Latinos, Native Americans, and African Americans. Before Columbus arrived, Native Americans were already here in present day United States. They already had established their civilizations and the continent was filled with several hundred tribes with their own culture. However, centuries later their population massively declined due to various reasons. The decline of Native Americans was contributed to by reasons such as constant and relentless wars against them, their own illusion of a wrong prophecy and dishonest acts and treaties made to eliminate them and their culture. Americans in the mid 1800’s had imagined the west to be “virgin lands” that was awaiting the settlements of white people.
It appears that stereotypes highlighted in the documentary are still in use today. This is problematic because it shows that things have not changed and that history is repeating itself. However, the movie industry is not totally at fault. The media plays a huge role in portraying Indigenous people negatively. Moreover, the stereotypes provided by the media demonstrate how wrong and insensitive society is.
Europeans put this stereotype on the Native Americans because they resisted European expansion in America. The traditional “cowboys and Indians” stereotype is incorrect as well. In fact, most Native Americans were cowboys in the west (Dr. Vollan).

Stereotypes are qualities assigned to groups of people related to their race, nationality and sexual orientation. When I think of Native Americans the first image that comes in my mind is their ethnicity, and appearance. As I remember I was always seeing Native Americans in movies, books .etc. in the same appearance.
