Brittany Lewis is the New Miss Black America Last August 26, 2017, Miss Black America 2016, Nicole Lyn Hibbert, crowned her successor and new winner of Miss Black America 2017, Brittany Lewis. Lewis graduated with a degree in broadcast, telecommunications, and mass media from the Temple University and took African-American studies. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority as well as the National Council of Negro Women while she was an undergrad. At the moment, she is a third-year PhD student at George Washington University. She hopes to become a track professor at one of the major universities someday. She attends high schools and universities to talk about the awareness and signs of domestic violence. One of her advocacies is to focus on improving the standard of education of African-American youth. Her dissertation centers on the events in Atlantic City from the year 1964 throughout the 1980s particularly in the casino business and the pageant industry. She expressed how the first pageant was a crucial moment due to feminist protesters who are rallying outside the Miss America pageant while the Miss Black America was simultaneously taking place nearby. The Beginning of Miss Black America In 1968, Miss Black America was created by J. Morris Anderson as a form of protest against one of the rules of the Miss America pageant which prevented women of color from entering the competition. Currently, the Miss Black America pageant is being run by Anderson’s daughter, Aleta. One fun fact is that in 1971, media mogul, Oprah Winfrey was hailed as Miss Tennessee and joined the Miss Black America pageant. Read the original story via
