An epic, as described by Rebecca Ray, is “[a story] told on a grand scale, with armies, heroes, gods, and the brutal forces of nature depicted over long character arcs and sweeping landscapes.”(Ray) all the key components you will find in an Epic according to Elisah Winikka are, “The Ordinary World... The Call To Adventure… Refusal Of The Call... Accepting the Call and Crossing the Threshold… Supernatural Aid… Talisman… Allies/Helpers… Tests… The Supreme Ordeal… Reward and Return… Restoring the World.”(Winikka) So what better way to discuss an epic then through the wonderful tale of Disney’s Moana. Disney’s Moana is the very definition of an epic. Moana travels across the sea and comes face to face with death. Moana wants a sense of adventure, she wants to be able to go beyond the reef. Which brings me to the next two components. “The Call to Adventure,” (Winikka) The story of Moana is nothing but filled with this “Call to Adventure,”(Winikka) the main song throughout the story talks about this “Call to Adventure”(Winikka) Moanas call to jump in a boat and sail across the sea and explore a world that is no longer explored. This need to go beyond the reef is heightened once she discovers her Island is “stuck by disease”(K) as Chloe K puts it. The Island is sick and her people are running out of food and supplies so now it is up to Moana to brave the sea and go beyond the call. Yet, it is not that simple. To go beyond the reef would be to disobey her father and to leave behind all she loved, including her sick grandmother. Moana initially refused the call but with the encouragement of her Grandmother, she made the huge leap, gathers supplies and sails away on a ship.
