Mob Mentality is a theme seen regularly in the book, “We’re Not From Here.” Mob mentality is when several people all act together on emotions rather than logic. It is commonly seen when the Zhuri gather together in swarms to attack Lan’s family. According to Psychology Today, one of the causes of mob mentality in groups is due to emotions and deindividuation. Most times when the Zhuri formed swarms, they were angry about the humans.
Mob Mentality Mob mentality is how people are influenced by others to adopt certain behaviors. Mob mentality works, because when people are in a group, they lose their sense of being a separate individual and become deindividualized. As a result, people may participate in activities they typically do not participate in as individuals. For example, when people applause for a performance, others join in due to the fear of being left out.
Mob mentality is the unique characteristics that occur in a large group (Smith). Mob mentality causes people to take in the ways of the group, despite their own ideas or concepts (Edmonds). When a large group congregates and is upset about a certain thing, a lead rioter can fling a whole group into a state of rage (Edmonds). William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies is about a group of young boys, aged around 6-12, that crash land on an uninhabited island, and without adults, they fail miserably. In E.L Epstein’s article “NOTES ON LORD OF THE FLIES” Golding reveals in his novel that the flaws in human nature lead to a flawed society; which is seen in society (Epstein par. 3). Lord of the Flies provides an example of how imperfections in human nature start to surface when people are in a groups. One imperfection is their tendency to do violent and demeaning things as a mob.

Mob mentality is when people get influence from a group and turn that people to violent. In a large group, people who have mob mentality usually have the same behavior and characteristic as another. Mob mentality makes people feels aggressive which means crazy and chaotic which means confuse in a group. Other people also use herd behavior and herd mentality to tell their similarity behavior.

The issue of mob mentality happens frequently as people depend too much on one another and easily get influenced by what the majority of the people think and decide. The internal or hidden pressure among the group is another factor that leads to why people follow the majority. As everyone started to change when “All at once the crowd swayed towards the island and were gone-following Jack. Even the tiny kids went and did their best among the leaves and broken branches” (Golding 38). Once Jack had become a stubborn dictator, one by one people started to follow him.
Everyone has this underlying darkness within them that is hidden away deep inside the nooks and crannies of their hearts. Golding demonstrates this through the use of his major characters, Ralph and Jack. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, the author William Golding utilizes character development to suggest the idea that when individuals are separated from civilization, dark forces will arise and threaten unity and harmony. Golding presents the protagonist, Ralph, who is decently intelligent and completely civilized, to demonstrate how once individuals are pulled away from civilization, the dark forces within them will arise and change how they are for the time being.
In society, there are many standards that people must uphold to. In western society, it is uncommon for men to have long hair or for women to have short hair. Naturally, people will be conscientious of their differences between other people and try to change them or cover them up, and often times people who do not follow the standard are looked down upon. This leads to people trying to fit into the groups around them almost thoughtlessly. However, when people conform without thinking, it can lead to dangerous consequences.
Mob mentality occurs in The Lord of the Flies, especially when order is given to a group of people. “All at once the crowd swayed towards the island and were gone-following Jack. Even the tiny kids went and did their best among the leaves and broken branches” (Golding 38). This passage is showing leadership. The reader are also showing how Jack is the leader and everyone follows him and his orders.
Throughout the novel of Lord of the Flies, William Golding provides a profound insight into human nature. Golding builds on a message that all human beings have natural evil inside them. To emphasize, the innate evil is revealed when there’s lack of civilization. The boys are constantly faced with numerous fears and eventually break up into two different groups. Although the boys believe the beast lives in the jungle, Golding makes it clear that it lurks in their hearts.
In the book, Lord of the Flies, Golding exhibits how absolute power corrupts absolutely. Ralph confronts Jack, in a fight for authority, claiming that Jack is a, “beast and a swine and a bloody, bloody thief” (Golding 177). The desire for power breaks the boys’ fragile civilization and causes strife between both leaders. The fight for power between leaders displays, not only, a loss of moral but also an inverse relationship. Another way that Golding proves the contention “absolute power corrupts absolutely” right, is the way he shows the corrupt tactics people and leaders use as a sly way to gain followers.
