The Fleagle Gang was a group of four guys who robbed the First National Bank in Lamar Colorado on may 23, 1930. The leader of the gang's name was Ralph Fleagle, and he was accompanied by his brother and two other friends. They were caught by fingerprint which was the first time the FBI used a single fingerprint to ever solve a crime. When they were caught, most sentenced to hang and died in a two week period in July 1930, but Jake Fleagle was killed in a shootout (The Fleagle Gang). The Arsenal Island has always been a center point for trade or military. Rock Island was the Native American’s natural fortress in time of war. This is where all of the children and women went if there was a battle nearby. Around 10,000 Native Americans lived off the coast of the Rock River and used Rock Island as a place of recreation and where the Good Spirit lived. At this time the British had trade shops set up.

In Ross Haenfler’s book, Straight Edge: Clean-Living Youth, Hardcore Punk, and Social Change, he discusses and evaluates the many aspects that are present in straight edge (sXe) culture. Straight edge individuals define themselves as being members of the larger punk subculture. Furthermore, in addition to being “punk,” they refrain from alcohol use, drug use, and premarital sex. In chapter six of this book, Haenfler examines the obstacles that straight edge women face, specifically in the Denver punk scene.
How well Wes Moore describes the culture of the streets, and particularly disenfranchised adolescents that resort to violence, is extraordinary considering the unbiased perspective Moore gives. Amid Moore’s book one primary theme is street culture. Particularly Moore describes the street culture in two cities, which are Baltimore and the Bronx. In Baltimore city the climate and atmosphere, of high dropout rates, high unemployment and poor public infrastructure creates a perfect trifecta for gang violence to occur. Due to what was stated above, lower income adolescent residents in Baltimore are forced to resort to crime and drugs as a scapegoat of their missed opportunities.
In Robert Lipsyte’s essay “Jock Culture,” Lipsyte begins with the distinction between Jocks and Pukes. He, then, refers to himself as an example of a Puke and a Columbia Crew University coach, Bill Stowe, as an example of a Jock. Lipsyte slanders Bill Stowe by calling him a “dumb Jock” because of his misguided beliefs in Jock Culture (Paragraphs 1 and 2). Lipsyte continues his discussion by demonstrating what Jock Culture is.

During the proposal of the Equal Rights Amendment in 1972, Schlafly founded a group with more proactive approach called “Stop ERA” with one goal in mind, to defeat the ratification of ERA. After the success of the “Stop ERA” campaign, Phyllis Schlafly founded the eagle forum, a pro family group dedicated to “opposing all encroachments against American sovereignty through…feminist goals” (Schlafly). Althoug the primary interaction that eagle forum has had with the womens movement was the ERA, they also are incessantly combating
“Beta club is not for everyone, it is just for those who want to be leaders.” That is exactly why I want to be a member of the Beta club. I want to be a leader. The Beta club is an opportunity giving program, which will give us the chance to serve others and be around others who are different from us. The Beta club can open up many students’ hearts and convey their dreams to the world.
This was formed from years of social views and gender representations in film. Women were often thought of as people who had small roles to play in life and a desire to there working class of men. The males were given heroic and superior roles, usually seen saving the day or doing what it took to support a family as seen in The Searchers where the men had to protect the family in search for their loved ones after the Indians raided the family’s home. In the movie cowboys vs aliens we also had a similar situation where the males had to leave home in search for their enemy. Males are still seen in this way in featured films and females still desired over men with their feminine aspects.
A truly unique American mass culture saw its creation in the 1920’s where radio shows and movies could be shared all over the country and more Americans were living in cities than ever before. The creation of mass culture in America could be seen as a side effect of all of these new technologies and societal differences that took place in the 20s. Time space compression also had a large effect on mass culture as well. In the 20s because of the creation of new technologies. people could now communicate throughout the country and develop their own similar culture.
Within any society there may be different cultures as well as subcultures. The components of cultures and subcultures are symbols, language, values and norms. Small societies tend be culturally uniform in comparison to large societies tend to contain numerous subcultures. A subculture is a group within a larger culture, that has norms, beliefs, values, and behavioral patterns that are distinguishable from the larger society. Examples of a subculture include bikers, skaters, hackers, gamers, etc.
The Impact of Culture and Gender Roles Heather Richardson-Barker Drexel University Society has clearly defined boundaries between what is considered to be male or female. The development of an individual’s gender role is formed by interactions with those in close proximity. Society constantly tells us how we should look, act and live based on gender, as well as the influence of family, friends and the media have a tremendous impact on how these roles are formed and the expected behavior of each gender role. The term Gender, as defined by the United Nations, includes the psychological, social, cultural, and behavioral characteristics associated with being female or male. It further defines acceptable
The sociological imagination refers to Mills notion on how social forces can influence an individual. He refers to it as an ability to see situations in a broader social spectrum and see how interactions can influence an individual and situations. It is important in terms of studying society because it is a way to help us see things not how they appear to be on a surface elements but through an alternative perspective. The differences between micro and macrosociology is that micro sociology studies people at an interpersonal way, such as face to face interactions while macro sociology studies people on a much larger scale by looking at the bigger picture. A societal issue that can be studied using both perspectives would be divorce.
Introduction Culture and Subculture Culture is a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. (Tylor, 1871) Subculture is a different, or even opposes, the mainstream culture in society in terms of norms and values. It is formed by people sharing similar background. These people usually form their own norms, values, attitudes, and lifestyle.
Subcultures are values and norms different from those of the majority and are held by a group within a wider society, these social groups are organized around shared interests and practices. A subculture is usually attached to clothes music and other visible fronts within the given community, that is part of the general society. Subcultures contain individuals who think alike who feel like they are not a part of the bigger culture of society and then create a sense of identity for themselves. The term Hip Hop is used as a subcultural movement. Scholars such as Carl and Virgil Taylor emphasize “Hip-Hop is not only a genre of music, but also a complex system of ideas, values and concepts that reflect newly emerging and ever-changing creative correlative expressive mechanisms including but not limited to song, poetry, film and fashion.”
