The “Zoot Suit Riots” were a series of events linked to the Sleepy Lagoon murder case, that took place in Los Angeles California in June 1943. Despite the fact that zoot suits were not only worn by mexican americans during this time, and they were referred to the zoot gangsters. Often throughout this period of time as the city of LA began to grow, Mexican Americans were looked as outsiders in a city that was once built by their ancestors. Although zoot suits were not limited to only a single race I think the name of the event give it a false single sided outlook on the story. Ultimately singling out Mexican Americans during this time, even though the sailors had just as much or even more involvement during the riots.
When history is whitewashed, it is filtered to hide marginalized groups and oppression. Recently on the news, textbook company McGraw-Hill stated that the company will rewrite a portion of their book which referred to African American slaves as workers and immigrants (McAfee, 2015). I was offended by the fact that McGraw-Hill even published a book that slaves were called workers and immigrants. To say that African Americans were workers and not slaves changes the whole fundamental history of enslaved populations; workers implies a willingness, when in fact, African American slaves were not willing participants. When you change the wording in textbooks, you change people’s views and perspectives of historical events and their everlasting effects on cultures.

By the 1940’s Mexicans lived in barrio which were entirely different from white suburban neighborhoods. Parents were worried that their kids ventured away from the barrios. Unlike their parents, who were okay with being excluded from their rights, this newer generation were more rebellious and wanted to challenge norms. The Mexican youth began to start wearing the zoot suit. The zoot suit consisted of big balloon pants, it was inspired by African Americans.

I believe these events could happen in Moreno Valley the majority people living in Moreno Valley are whites the second race is African Americans and browns. I believe racism has a big impact of these riots and crimes against each other. People move to Moreno Valley because of the property value. Blacks are coming from watts or Compton then we have the browns coming from Los Angeles to Moreno Valley, we are going to have the same problems how I like to call it is little Los Angeles.
The Rodney King Riot happened in Los Angeles in the year of 1992. Rodney King was an African American male who was arrested on charges because of speeding, drunk driving, and refusing to stop his vehicle. Four police officers who have claimed to have witnessed King’s actions such as being high on drugs and was trying to attack them explains why they did what they did. A resident nearby by the name of George Holliday captured about 12 minutes of the attack on film. King was tasered, brutally beaten with side-handled batons, then forced to the ground to lie still which was where he was handcuffed.

Police forces are often expressed as being separate from military or other organizations involved in the defense of the state against attackers. However, with the Ferguson protests and riots the police chose to use many tactics in order to diminish the protests and riots. After the African-American teen Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a police officer, the hashtag and movement, #BlackLivesMatter, was created.

The LA Riots started due to the verdict of police brutality on Rodney King. Many were furious that none of the police officers, who were white was not charged in his beating. Many African-Americans viewed this as a racial conflict, as many Whites got no charges on violence towards blacks, while Blacks were severely charged if they also had done something similar to a white man. Overall, this just caused major violence around the city of LA leading to many deaths. Another issue the movie deals with was the losing of loved ones.
It all started in March 1991 when Rodney King was spotted speeding while drunk and led police on a high-speed pursuit. When King came to a halt, a witness caught on tape, four police officers beating King and submitted it to the authorities. The four police officers were found innocent and this verdict led to a riot by outraged African-Americans on 29 April 1992. Although the riots appear to be sudden and unplanned to many, the Los Angeles riots can be said to be a planned mishap waiting to happen as a result of several social conditions like poverty, racism and police brutality that caused dissatisfaction amongst the people, and the incident involving Rodney King was the breaking point. As Smyth (2006) suggests, “the Los Angeles Riots were not borne overnight.”
