Montresor Inhumane Analysis

1037 Words5 Pages

The protagonist in the story, “The Cask of Amontillado”, by Edgar Allan Poe, is Montresor. Montresor’s behaviors and actions in the story are inhumane due to his lack of healthy social communication and interaction. Montresor demonstrates this barbaric behavior by using reverse psychology on people, by acting friendly with Fortunado (the person he is plotting to kill), and lastly, by trying to fit in with Fortunado and others like him. Why go to so much trouble to try and keep him as a friend when you are going to kill him? To summarize the tale, Montresor plots to trap Fortunado behind a wall brick by brick, or in other words, bury him alive. If you read this story, you too will most likely find it strange how Montresor is so affable about everything he says to Fortunado. To wrap it up, it is strange how friendly Montresor is with Fortunado. Finally, the last point in proving Montresor’s strangeness is that he tries to fit in with Fortunado and others like him. This supports the idea of Montresor being inhumane because the story leads me to believe that Montresor went through all this …show more content…

Even though it appears he is part of the Masons, you con tell that he is not fully involved. You can observe that he is not involved in this society because of how long it takes him to understand the gestures that Fortunado is showing him. Because of his confusion in the sign that Fortunado gave him, I have concluded that he was part of the Masons only to associate himself with people similar to Fortunado. Montresor most likely wanted to get to know him better and to have a backup plan to lure Fortunado down to his vaults. To conclude, Montresor is inhumane because he joined this society just to be in with Fortunado and people similar to
