The cold, ruthless Montresor couldn’t control the evil and found that murder was the last resort. Although Montresor despised of Fortunato he buried the hate with a smile. The jester, Fortunato for he always made jokes was easily tricked to come to the catacombs where he was chained and buried alive by Montresor who plastered a wall right in front of him. The evil within overtook his conscious, enabling him to commit the perfect murder. The deranged side of Montresor is more extreme than what you would think when someone says crazy. This side allows Montresor to think murder is the best option. He always seemed to smile, but not of the normal. “I continued, as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation.” You can see that Montresor find himself smiling at the thought of a dead fortunato, the smile that buries the hatred. Montresor not only crazy, but smart created a plan that he would soon initiate. He first starts compliementing Fortunato then finds himself asking for a favor. I said to him “My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. Montresor was a man who followed through with his plans so he didn’t hesitate putting up the wall. “My heart grew sick; it was dampness of the catacombs that made it so. I hastened to make an end of my labor, I forced the last stone into its position; I plastered it up. Poe add a sort of creepy humor, he says that his heart grew sick, but not because he he is murdering someone, but rather because of the dampness of the catacombs. He also says that he plastered it up, but there is no sign of sorrow that tells us he felt bad. This shows how Montresor feels he is doing the right
