How Montresor Got Away With Murder What goes on in the mind of a murderer? In Well, “The Cask Of Amontillado,” by Edgar Allen Poe, the narrator walks the reader through what goes on in the mind of a murderer. It does that by detailing all of the meticulous planning that Montresor did to make sure that his crime was perfect. The murder is explained in the story so here is a summary of “The Cask Of Amontillado.” It begins with Montresor talking about the injuries Fortunato has inflicted on Montresorn and how he vowed revenge. This causes Montresor to get his revenge by luring Fortunato from the carnival into his catacombs. Montresor, abusing the fact that Fortunato was in a drunken state, leads him into a niche in his catacombs and seals him in there. The traits that allow him to pull off the murder are his intelligence, how cunning he is, and finally how methodical he is. Montresor proves his intelligence many times throughout the poem. This shows him putting a mask on so people do not suspect him if they saw him walking home with Fortunato. This helps him make sure people will not come to his house to look for Fortunato because they would not know who took him.
