Poe uses several devices to create and heighten the suspense of the story. He uses grave details about the environment and a series of events to maintain the suspense, along with slight foreshadowing. The opening of the story is the beginning of the suspense. Poe informs the audience right off the bat that Montresor is out for revenge and he doesn’t plan to get caught (Poe 165). This slight foreshadowing has the audience already on their toes because they are wondering what happened, what type of revenge is he planning? The details that Poe gives throughout the story are also used to heighten the suspense that was created in the foreshadowing. Poe uses descriptions of the environment that causes the audience to wonder. The feeling of darkness and death are all throughout the story. Going into the vault far into the crypt below the ground gives off a creepy feeling. How Poe uses details to describe the human remains that lined the walls of the crypt and how the remains crowded the floor causes a deep suspense (Poe 168). Poe’s use of words keeps the suspense going. Although the suspense is deep throughout the story the outcome is doubted. Poe portrays Montresor as a caring friend through the store while he builds the suspense. He shows Montresor as constantly showing concern for Fortunato as he coughs (Poe 166). Montresor acts as if he cares for Fortunato and this causes doubt that the outcome will be less suspenseful than it is built
