The great Sigmund Frewd once said "Unexpected emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will co,e forth in unglued ways." This quote signifies the idea of revenge in Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado." In the beginning of the story after many injuries from the arrogant Fortunato, Montressor sets out for revenge. Montressor finds Fortunato at a part they both attended and tricks him into going on a mission for wine. As Fortunato gets manipulated into going deeper into the cask, Montressor's true intentions become undeniably clear later as he begins to burry Fortunato alive. In order to get away with the murder, Montressor demonstrates many qualities that help him be an undiscovered killer. Montressor is introduced in the beginning of the story as a man who is very vengeful. As Montressor bares the last insult from Fortunato that he can take, he vows to get revenge for all of Fortunato's pranks. He decides enough is enough after multiple tricks, that it is time to get Fortunato back. "I must not only punish but punish with impunity" (p.1, l.10-11). Before planning to lead Fortunato deep into the cask, Montressor explains to the reader how he knew the exact way to get rid of the attendants and make sure there where no witnesses. "I had told them that I should not return until the morning, and had given them explicit orders not to stir from the house. These orders were sufficient, I well knew, to insure their immediate disappearance, one and all, as soon as my back was turned" (p.2, l.3-8). The fact that Montressor planned ahead in order to ensure no one would be home shows how tactical he truly is.
