World War II has no shortage of examples demonstrating man’s inhumanity to man: the atomic bombs, the Holocaust, the fire bombings, and the war itself all evidence the horrors that humans can visit upon other humans. Night, by Elie Wiesel, establishes certain examples of cruelty, like tossing infants into fire and using babies as target practice. Fire is the common theme in these examples, as much of the death resulting from the war and genocide is attributable to fire. Thus, inhumanity and fire are linked by the human capacity for violence. When the people of Sighat learn of the horrors Moishe the Beadle witnessed, they didn’t believe it; they couldn’t even imagine one human doing the things he described to another human being.
“Nineteen”, by Elizabeth Alexander uses language and tone to form a multi-sensory poem about remembering her youth and desire to connect to her past Vietnam vet lover. These aspects of language and tone are embedded in the outer form of the poem, as the author forms an imaginative recreation of her young adult life, which directly impacts the reader to allow for an enjoyable simple read. The elements of language and tone formation ensure the translation of Alexander’s emotions or feelings of her youth for the audience to relate and understand. In the first place, the language within “Nineteen” is casual and not really poetic.

It creates a sense of an atmosphere and can help the reader feel the emotions that the characters have. The mood is there to help grab the reader’s attention and make sense of the environment. All fiction books use this method, but two novels that used it especially well are Dracula by Bram Stoker and Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. To begin, Dracula’s mood is very gloomy and dark.
Ethan Saiewitz October 19, 2015 English 4: Holocaust Literature Ms. Beal Dehumanization and Poetic Language When one word or image is unable to describe the indescribable events of the Holocaust, many authors turn to metaphors, similes, and other figurative language to draw comparisons between the horrific acts and something readers might be familiar with. In Survival in Auschwitz, Primo Levi uses figurative language to convey how the Nazis dehumanized the prisoners and to make the traumatic experiences more relatable to the reader. Levi often draws comparisons between the prisoners of Auschwitz and animals. For example, in describing a fellow prisoner, Levi states: “He is Null Achtzehn. He is not called anything except that, Zero Eighteen, the last three figures of his entry number; as if everyone was aware that only a man is worthy of a name, and that Null Achtzehn is no longer a man.
Though there are many differences and variations in sources from the Holocaust, whether it be Night written by Elie Wiesel, Life is Beautiful directed by Roberto Benigni, or multiple accounts from Holocaust survivors from an article called Tales from Auschwitz by The Guardian, they all will agree that it was a terrible and unforgivable atrocity committed not only to the Jewish people, but all of mankind. This book shows how the Holocaust should be taught and not be forgotten, due to it being a prime example of human impureness. Humans learn off trial and error, how the Jewish population was affected, decrease in moral, and the unsettled tension are prime examples of such mistakes. The Jewish population was in jeopardy, therefore other races in the world are at risk of genocide as well and must take this event as a warning of what could happen. In the Auschwitz concentration camp, there was a room filled with shoes.
The human condition is a very malleable idea that is constantly changing due to the current state of mankind. In the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel, the concept of the human condition is displayed in the worst sense of the concept, during the Holocaust of WWII. During this time, multiple groups of people, most notably European Jews, were persecuted against and sent to horrible hard labor and killing centers such as Auschwitz. In this memoir, Wiesel uses complex figurative language such as similes and metaphors to display the theme that a person’s state as a human, both at a physical and emotional level, can be altered to extreme lengths, and even taken away from them, under the most extreme conditions.

In Athens and the Gupta Empire both governments had similar ways of dividing the government. Pericles, the leader of the direct democracy in Athens, distributed power by dividing the government into three sections: the Boule, the Ekklesia, and the Dikasteria. This would allow certain laws be passed by certain branches. Likewise, Chandragupta II, the ruler of the Gupta Empire decided to rule a bureaucratic government by dividing the empire into different provinces.

The author’s word choice plays a role into developing these feelings because the way the author chooses to use their words, it is a way to makes the reader understand what is happening and it captures their understanding of it. The author’s diction can be illustrated when it mentions, “At intervals, while turning over the leaves of my book. I studied the aspect of that winter afternoon.” As readers we can experience the diction, when the author encounters leaves instead of pages. The scenario used here illustrates how he is using the time and weather to demonstrate these feelings.
The Holocaust was an execution of 8 million Europeans, and “ 6 million of the Europeans killed were Jewish women, children, and men that were brutally murdered” (Strahinich 7). It “was a catastrophe in our modern history” (Strahinich 7) now staining our history pages with hundreds of innocent people’s blood, forever lost in the grounds of the Holocaust. It took “place in Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia, and Czechoslovakia” (Altman 9) is some of the places where hundreds died. Thanks to “Adolf Hitler” (Strahinich 8) and “the Nazis government” (Strahinich 10), they “plunged most of Europe” (Allen 7) into turmoil, taking lives that did not need to go.

It’s difficult to imagine the way humans brutally humiliate other humans based on their faith, looks, or mentality but somehow it happens. On the novel “Night” by Elie Wiesel, he gives the reader a tour of World War Two through his own eyes , from the start of the ghettos all the way through the liberation of the prisoners of the concentration camps. This book has several themes that develop throughout its pages. There are three themes that outstand from all the rest, these themes are brutality, humiliation, and faith. They’re the three that give sense to the reading.
