Toward the end of the poem the tone changes and becomes an at ease or comfortable feeling. A quote that illustrates this is “And I tell them in Spanish/ how beautiful they are./ And they are more beautiful and lovely/ than all the white women in the world” (Olivarez 60-63). This quote shows a change in the author’s thinking.
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” the author, Richard Connell uses the wonders of figurative language to spice things up in many ways throughout the story. Almost every page had something lying within itself, hidden behind metaphors similes, personification, and the list goes on. Some examples of how Richard Connell uses figurative language were clearly displayed on page 62: “Didn’t you notice that the crew’s nerves were a bit jumpy today?” This page also began to reveal the main feeling/emotion of the story(eerie/suspicious) came to be-which was set off by the example I used above. In this scene, the author uses very descriptive words and/or adjectives in his choice(s) of figurative language when he writes, “There was no breeze.
For example, the short sentence, “It is late October” (Rostand 201) changes the mood very quickly from bright to gloomy. In the beginning of the section, Rostand uses long sentences that have nothing but positive energy and phrases, but suddenly he transitions to such a short, choppy sentence. “Late” is not a very uplifting word, and October is normally a darker time of the year, literally and figuratively. Rostand wants to include certain details, but avioids going too in depth with short sentences by utilizing longer ones. By using long sentences and many drawn out phrases, Rostand makes the scene’s composition very visual.
In the excerpt from “One Writer’s Beginnings”, Eudora Welty conveys a positive tone toward her childhood experiences. She accomplishes this tone with descriptive diction, impressionable images, and unusual syntax. Welty begins the passage in first person, with a description of Mrs. Callowny, the librarian. She uses the following words and phrases to emphasize the effect of her appearance on the children: “dragon eye”, “commanding voice”, “seething sound”, “steaming face”, “strong eyes”, and “witch”.

Pride can often change a person's character and demeanor without even realizing it, causing there to be potentially regretful and somber effects. This was demonstrated in the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst is a story about the complexities and challenges of sibling connections and how one prideful achievement can result in an unexpected outcome. James Hurst uses many literary techniques to create the mood that can come from these outcomes. In “The Scarlet Ibis,” author James Hurst uses sequences of time, foreshadowing, figurative language, symbolism, and first-person point of view to enhance the story’s somber mood.
Hughes and cullen both use an underlying emotion to write their poetry. Hughes uses anger and force. Cullen uses a more informational and calm approach. Hughes uses strong descriptively forceful phrases like “fester like a sore” or “stink like rotten meat” when writing to gross out the reader but also to entice them to read more. Cullen who also uses descriptive language goes for a more calm approach using phrases like “silken cloth” or box of gold.”

While other topics present themselves, the varying crafts included in the essay point to the fast-burning flame of the speakers. Using identifying phrases with multiple interpretations, a short and to-the-point meter, and lyrical alliteration and assonance, Brooks tells a compelling tale of seven ill-fated youth. Brooks repeats “We” to create a direct approach to those that are teenage dropouts of school. The author states “ We real cool We left school”. The narration of this verse comes from a young perspective.
In Annabel lee by Edgar Allen Poe the use of his tone words has an overall effect of the mood. He uses all of these connotative tone words to show the loving tone it has. The connotative words he uses are very deep and passionate words about his love to Annabel Lee. Edgar said that she loved him and he loved her. That they thought about nothing else but to love and be loved by one another.
Then when the author changes the tone at the end of the poem in the last stanza to hopeful tone the reader can feel the hope and happiness that a person feels when they are down and they are given kindness.
