Over the course of the poem “Where Were You on May 6, 1937?,” the mood changes from happy and carefree to sad and serious.(RA) In the first stanza of the poem, Pacheco describes the experience of seeing the Hindenburg on May 6, 1937 when he is a boy. In lines 1 through 3, the author writes how he and his friend Danny are playing with a Spaldeen ball in the streets of New York. (CE 1) The playful setting of the pounding of the ball contributes to the light-hearted feeling of the poem. (CE 1) Since radio announcers are almost always calm and cool, the reader knows something very sad has happened to affect the announcer in this way. (E) Second, in lines 25-28, the author tells about seeing the Hindenburg crash on the Newsreel at the movies. He notes how his mother and other women are crying as they watch. (CE 2) Most people do not cry when seeing the news, so the event had a great emotional effect even on people who were not directly connected to those who died in the crash. In addition, because Pacheco sees his own mother crying, the mood of sadness is emphasized. (E) Last, in lines 31-34, the author says that he wishes Danny could have hit the Hindenburg with the Spaldeen and changed its course so that the tragedy would not have happened.
